Explore abstract design and watercolor techniques to create compositions that are elegant, harmonious and briliantly designed. Expand your knowledge of color theory, value, and composition to make paintings that are graceful, sophisticated, and classic while learning to enhance your control of watercolor.
Erin’s workshops include demonstrations and lots of one-on-one attention. Her positive and supportive nature and highly trained eye give you the encouragement and feedback needed to expand your painting horizons. Erin fosters a playful, relaxed and open atmosphere in the studio conducive to being fearless and confident while honing skill and technique. This workshop is suited for all levels. SCHEDULE for BOTH DAYS:
- Arrive & Settle: 8:30 :: Time for students to arrive, settle in, and grab a cup of coffee.
- Class Segment A: 9:00-12:00 :: Class time with Erin who will demonstrate and guide the 1st part of class.
- Lunch & Stroll: 12:00 PM :: You can choose to brown bag it or take a stroll to one of the many hip and artsy eateries in the historic Artist's Village in Santa Ana, like C4 Deii, Chapter One, and The Gypsy Den.
- Class Segment B: 1:30-4:00 PM :: Class time with Erin who will guide the 2nd part of class.
- Show & Tell, Clean-Up & Depart: 4:00-5:00 PM
SUPPLY LIST (Students are asked to bring the following items listed below to the workshop)
Erin's general advice on buying supplies for this workshop: Invest money in good paper first, paints second, and brushes third. Good paper makes a huge difference in the result!
PAPER
- 9"x12" or 11"x14" Fabriano Studio Watercolor Paper Pad Cold Press 140lb. 12-20 sheet count or other alternative brand watercolor paper. (This paper is very good quality for the money.)
- 2 sheets of watercolor paper 22"x30" 140lb Fabriano or Arches Cold Press
PAINTS: Small 15ml tubes or pan set is okay! Grahm & Co., Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, Holbein are good quality
Basic Palette, suggested colors
- warm red - Permanent Red Light OR Vermillion
- cool red - Quinacridone Rose OR Madder Lake Deep
- warm blue - Ultramarine (leans towards violet)
- cool blue - Pthalo Blue OR Prussian (leans towards green)
- cool yellow - Lemon Yellow
- warm yellow - Hansa Yellow Deep
- Burnt Sienna OR Lt. Oxide Red
- Raw Umber
- Black
BRUSHES (suitable for watercolor/gouache): Simply Simmons watercolor brushes are economical and good quality
(synthetic recommended)
A suggested range of shapes and sizes:
- 3/4” or 1” flat wash
- #3 Round
- #6 Round
- #10 or 12 Round
OTHER SUPPLIES
- Pencils, erasers
- Plastic or Porcelain watercolor palette with plenty of room to mix.
- Plastic water container (16 oz)
- Spray bottle for water
- Artist tape (1/2"-3/4"-wide)
- Paper towels
- Sketchbook

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Erin McIntosh is a working artist and educator from Athens, Georgia. She studied Fine Art earning B.F.A.s in Painting and Art Education and an M.F.A. in Studio Art with emphasis in Painting and Drawing from The University of Georgia. Her work has been published in New American Paintings and exhibited at Atlanta's Hartfield-Jackson International Airport among other numerous exhibitions. She has been teaching art for fifteen years and teaching in higher education for the past eight years including all levels of Studio Art and Art Appreciation courses. She has taught classes at The University of Georgia including its Cortona, Italy campus, the University of North Georgia, and the Lyndon house Art Center in Athens, GA.
