At the start of every year, I like to create a
journal or list of some sort that helps me re-focus what my wants,
wishes and priorities are for the coming year. My theme in just about
everything I do, is She Matters. All of our retreat, my classes, my
energy goes into reminding myself and others that yes.. YOU matter.
Women are beautiful, wondering, giving, loving creatrures and love to
celebrate that and remind each one of us that we have so much to give
and offer each other and the world! I thought it would be fun to start
the year off by creating a "she Matters" art journal, that I can carry
with me for when inspiration strikes, that i can use when I am in other
classes, or when I need to get out of creative rut and just "play". A
place to hold all of my hopes, dreams, wishes, priorities for the coming
year, but in beautiful artsy she art style.
During
this two day workshop I will show you how to create a beautiful
handmade art journal, that focuses on using paper and items you already
have and re-purposing them into a beautiful piece of art! During day
one, We will take ordinary things like pattern paper, old calendars,
envelopes, manila folder, old greeting cards, watercolor paper, etc, and
transform them into beautiful backgrounds using some of my favorite
techniques! We will be playing with paint, paste, inks, gelli plates,
stamps, stencils, and more, in some fun ways to create pages for our
Arsty Journal! Towards the end of day One, we will put our journals
together and then spend the rest of the day, adding some fun interactive
pieces to our journal pages using washi tape and a sewing machine!
In
day two, we will turn our focus onto the cover of our journal and
create a beautiful she Art girl that represents us as individuals and
will be theme of what our journal will become as you go home and add to
it by painting other girls on your already pre-pared backgrounds, during
the year to come. We will use lots of my favorite techniques and some
new ones, to create a girl that is truly unique and just the perfect way
to start out our year and this journal about YOU!
I
am BEYOND excited for this class and can't wait to share it with you!
let's start this year off right and create a beautiful place to host all
of our "she matters" reminders for the year to come!
xoxo
Christy

SUPPLY LIST (Each student will need to bring the following to class):
- 16-20 pieces of 12" x 12" scrapbooking papers. You might not use them all, but then you will have extras in case you want to swap some out. Don't worry too much about what they look like, as you will be covering them with paint. Just bring something you already have on hand! If you don't have scrapbooking paper, you can also bring watercolor paper. The size of your actual journal will depend on your taste and I will show you how to customize it. Also think outside the box and maybe bring decorative shaped paper, paper with die-cuts on it, etcetera.
- NOTE: If you don't have scrapbooking paper, and you don't want to go out and buy it, you can use almost ANYTHING as long as it's a thick type of paper. Just make sure it's cardstock weight. I like 12"x 12" papers because they are big and I can create a bigger journal with it.
- Any old calendars, cards, envelopes, cardstock or even magazine covers ... ephemera that is thick like cardstock that you may want to include in your art journal. It needs to be thick in weight as we will be painting on it.
- You may not use all of it, but it's nice to have options! Remember that you can continue later to add to the journal too! They way we build it, you could add pages after you leave if you want to!
- AND you can get away without bringing these as well, the 12"x12" papers will be ENOUGH for you to make the journal with and create with during our time limit.
- 2-3 manila folders or pieces of cardstock: You will be making your own stencils/masks with them, so it just needs to be something thick.
- Washi tape: just a couple of rolls is all you need. Any design. I usually just use something that is neutral, like black and white script or polka dots. But really it can be anything!
- Acrylic paint: for the backgrounds, I really like using a mix of regular acrylics. Golden: fluid acrylics or heavy body. (When using gelli plates you are going to want heavy body or regular acrylics. Fluid acrylics don't work well with stencils and masks and other techniques we will be using on the gelli plates.) For creating the girls on the pages, you will want to bring additional colors for the hair, cheeks, and the eyes. I will bring the paint for the faces.
- will have a limited number of original art items on hand for those interested in purchasing her art.
- Liquitex Matte Medium (small bottle)
- Light Modeling paste (or any other pastes or mediums you like to use)
- Gelli plate: any size. I will also be bringing a few to share but if you don't want to take turns sharing, bring your own.
- Sketch pad or paper (or just plain copy paper) to practice drawing your girl and faces on
- Paintbrushes: 1/2-to 1-inch flat brush and then something small like a no. 2 or no. 4 filbert or small wash. Just something to paint details on the faces. Nothing fancy.
- Something to scrape paint and paste with: like an old credit card or spatula
- Exacto blade (great for scraping paint back)
- Scissors
- Ranger heat-it dryer gun (please don't bring embossing dryer guns, they are too loud for class)
- Small spray bottle
- Baby wipes
