MORNING
We will first work representationally on new, unmarked
canvases by first examining real flowers to study their overall essence,
including the flowers' color values in relationship to lights and
shadows. We will discuss and create compositions (e.g., placed in vases,
from up above, or single stems on a table top). We will then paint the
compositoin by creating what I call "flower clouds" where we start with
large chunky flower clouds and then add the darks and then the lights.
AFTERNOON
We will put finishing touches on the first canvases and
then shift into working with canvases that already have layers of paint
on them. If you have a canvas that has layers on them, please bring one
to class. If you don't have one, please bring a blank one and we can
spend a bit of time building up some quick layers. Onto these canvases
we will not be painting representationally with references but rather
magically with methods that get us to loosen up and create expressive
and unique flowers. I will also demonstrate ways in which these flowers
can evolve into new silhouettes of expressive subjects for different
paintings.

SUPPLY LIST:
- Photos of flowers: These may be photos from your garden or photos from the Internet or other sources that you want to reference for your painting. Make sure they are nice and clear and loaded onto your full-charged smart phone or tablet.
AND/OR ...
- Flowers (just a few from
your garden or from the flower shop that you want to paint. You can also
bring silk flowers if you want. I will also be bringing flower subjects
that you can use if you want to.) Bring a vase or jar that you might want to use to hold the flowers for the painting as well.
- At least 2 stretched canvases: 18 x 24 inches is a good size or something close to that size. I'd
say you could go smaller but not too much bigger. If one of the
canvases can already have layers of paint on it, that would be great. If
you don't have a canvas with painted layers, that's ok. Just bring the
blank ones.
- Acrylic paints in assorted colors. I favor Golden fluid acrylics, Make sure to include black, white, red, blue, and yellow. (NOTE:
There are certain colors of Golden Fluid Acrylics that are unique to my
palette. If you find yourself drawn to my Golden Fluid Acrylic paints
in the colors that I use, you are welcome to use them for a kit fee
of $5-15 (depending on how much you use) so that I can continue to
replenish my paint supply. Thank you for your understanding.)
- Palate knife (or two or three): there are lots to choose from. This is a pretty standard one that lots of people start out with. Pick one
that feels right to you. Eventually, you'll probably want to get several
but you'll learn to use the one you get during class.
STRESSED ABOUT SUPPLIES?
If the above supply list stresses you out because you just don't know where to get everything, not to worry. I can provide everything you need for the day including canvases, and paints and everything else you need for a kit fee of $30. These kits can be reserved by emailing me at [email protected].
