Oil Painting Fundamentals
{alla prima :: still life single-session works}
with Jenny Doh

2-Day Workshop

May 13-14, 2017

Location: Studio CRESCENDOh

207 N. Broadway St., Suite L, Santa Ana, CA 92701
[email protected]

In this workshop, I will teach the basic fundamentals for preparing and executing alla prima (wet-on-wet and single-session work) still life oil paintings.

DAY ONE
On the first day, we will discuss palette organization, paintbrush organization, substrate preparation, life composition, and value recognition, and artistic discipline. We will also look at paintings from some of my favorite oil painters and discuss their works in terms of composition, value and color.
I will do a painting demonstration on a smaller gessobord and help participants complete a small non-complex still life oil painting.

DAY TWO

On the second day, we will embark on a slightly larger work with a slighlty more complex composition/reference, using the fundamentals that were discussed on day one. I will do a painting demonstration on a larger canvas. Each participant will approach her/his work area in a manner where they are putting to practice all that was discussed on the first day. We will take as long as needed to complete this work this day.

SCHEDULE:

  • Arrive & Settle: 9:00 :: Time to arrive, and settle in.
  • Class Segment A: 9:30-12:00 :: Class time with Jenny who will demonstrate and guide the 1st part of class.
  • Lunch: 12:00 PM :: You can choose to brown bag it or take a stroll to one of the many hip and artsy eateries in the historic Artist's Village in Santa Ana, like C4 Deli, Chapter One, and The Gypsy Den.
  • Class Segment B: 1:30-4:30 PM :: Class time with Jenny who will guide the 2nd part of class.
  • Show & Tell, Clean-Up & Depart: 4:30-5:00 PM (we will go beyond this time if some painters need extra time)

SUPPLY LIST: For your convenience, the studio will provide walnut oil medium, mineral spirits, and all oil paints for each participant. This will help you use and understand my favorite paints before you make the investment into buying actual paints from my list. So in terms of what else you need to bring, here is the list:

  • SUBJECTS: Life subjects and/or photo references. If you have a favorite teacup or lemon or apple or anything that you think would be good for a still life composition, please bring those items. I will also be bringing items that you can use to make the composition. If you have a photo of something that you'd like to reference, please bring the photo. You can bring a hard copy of the photo or you can store it in a tablet (like an iPad) that is fully charged and bring that to have by your side. There are pros and cons between life and photo references and I use both all the time.
  • FABRICS: Simple, solid pieces of cloth and/or papers in a few assorted colors that you can place your life objects on, which will be part of the composition.
  • SUBSTRATES: For a long time, I used only Ampersand Gessorbords for my oil paintings. I still do. I have also recently started using stretched canvases and also canvas panels. I like using all of these and recommend that you bring 1-2 of each.
    • Ampersand Gessobord (cradled or flat): Some of the sizes that I like using are 5x7, 6 x 6, and 6 x 8 inches. We will use these for the first day's work. Make sure the bords do not have canvas texture or any texture to them. Just the smooth ampersand gessobords.
    • Canvas Panels: These are affordable substrates that are primed to work with oil or acrylics. They are not smooth ... they have the texture of canvas which I enjoy very much. I recommend going with this or stretched canvas for the second day's work. Either an 8x10 or 9x12 or 12 x 12 11x14 inches.
    • Stretched canvas: Again, primed to work with oils or acrylics. Another good option to work with.
  • PAINTBRUSHES:: Please don't bring cheap, bad brushes. You will be fighting them throughout the workshop. If you can just afford one brush, get the Bright size 4 linked below.
  • KNIVES: 1 small palette knife
  • PALETTE: Palette paper (I like to use this glass palette with a white piece of paper placed underneath. If I don't have this palette with me, I like to use white palette paper. I will have extra palette paper if you need to use mine
  • EASEL: the studio will have metal easels that can be used during class. If you have a sturdy wooden table easel like this one, please bring it, as it will provide greater stability as you work.
  • MISC: Paper towels, apron, two small jars with lids, and baby wipes
  • Panel Holder (optional): Though it is possible to paint on gessobords without these holders, painting WITH these holders will make a world of difference in terms of ease. If your bord is 6x6 or 5x7, you can get the smaller size. If it is or 8x8 or larger, you will want the larger size.
