Answer: One stroke at a time.
Question:
How do you paint a portrait?
In
this workshop, Jenny will teach the fundamentals for using acrylic paints to paint representational abstract portraits where we use photo references to paint the work.
DAY ONE
On the first day, we will work take some time to talk about taking photos with good lighting that can yield photos that have good value and contrast. We will also prepare our canvases, use our reference photos to draw the subject onto the canvas and then start painting the light, medium and dark values for our under painting.
We will also discuss color theory, color mixing, drawing, and using apps to help us see and paint value.
DAY TWO
On
the second day, we will continue to use our photo reference to start adding strokes of color onto our canvas, right over the strokes of value work that was done on the first day. We will finish the work intitutive methods to build layers onto the canvas. As time allows, we will also discuss ways to "destroy" and further abstract the work.
SCHEDULE for both days:
- Arrive & Settle: 9:00 :: Time to arrive, and settle in.
- Class Segment A: 9:30-12:00 :: Class time with Jenny who will demonstrate and guide the 1st part of class.
- Lunch & Stroll: 12:00 PM :: Lunch
- Class Segment B: 1:30-4:30 PM :: Class time with Jenny who will guide the 2nd part of class.
- Show & Tell, Clean-Up & Depart: 4:30-5:00 PM
SUPPLY LIST: For your convenience, Jenny will provide all the paints as well as pencils and paintbrushes for you to use throughout this class. The only other things that you are asked to bring are as follows:
- SUBJECTS: On the first day, we will be taking photos of ourselves ... one of which you may want to select to paint. However, just in case you don't want to paint any of the ones you take of yourself on the first day, please bring photos of people's faces stored on your smart phone or
tablet (like an iPad), devices fully charged. Also please print that out
the photos from your phone/tablet on a standard sheet of paper. If you
have an old
family photo, take a photo of that photo and print it
out. Photos with
high contrast (lights and darks) is recommended. If you don't have a photo, Jenny will have many
photo references
that you can use.
- CANVASES: At least 2 stretched canvases: 18 x 24 inches is a good size or something close to that size. I'd
say you could go smaller (16x20 is also a great size) but not too much bigger. We may only end up finishing one but I'd like to have you get a second one started during the process. This is a good one.
- MISCELLANEOUS: apron or smock to protect your clothes, baby wipes, paper towels, container for water, palette (plastic lids or cookie sheets or paper plates are great)
NOTES:
- Due to limited class size, the spot for this class is transferrable but payment is non-refundable. So if you enroll and you cannot come, you can sell or give your spot to someone but refunds are not available.
A note to beginners:
You are welcome
just as you are. No need to fear a lack of experience, especially any
sort of vulnerability because you haven't drawn or painted before or
regularly. This workshop is your portal of entry where all of that will
change.
A note to those who want to begin again:
You are welcome
just as you are. No matter how much I paint, each time I paint I go
through a block of sorts, where I need to learn again, how to sincerely
be in touch with who I am and what I want to paint and how to stay
sincere and expressive with all of that. This class will be an extention
of the journey you are on.
