Yukimi has been fascinated by the process of creating accordion books and series of pages with calligraphic marks (abstract lines and marks made by writing letters and words). During the creative process she enjoys playing within the content and placing elements with the flow. At the end of the process, she stands them up and views all the pages at once. Accordion books have a rich history around the world. They are made in many parts of Asia. They were also the book form of the Aztecs and Mayans. Book artists frequently experiment with the form.
DAY 1: starts with making marks with different writing tools and any found objects with Sumi ink on paper. We then develop alphabets with those marks and write some words and texts. We will challenge how much emotion we can put into our marks by examining the speed, the pressure, the direction of strokes, the relationship between marks and white space, and the distance between hand and writing surface.
DAY 2: starts with continues mark-making exercises with colors and different mediums. Then we will construct several small size accordion books with selected exercise pieces. The instruction of accordion book along with basic design layout and composition will be presented for designing effective book pages.
